Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D Deficiency

Someone I know was recently diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency. I didn’t know what vitamin D deficiency was so I decided to look it up. This blog will be about what vitamin D deficiency is, how it’s caused, and how it is possible to cure it.
Vitamin D Deficiency is when your body has too little vitamin D in the body. There are more than 3 million U.S cases each year.
First I will start off with telling you 5 reasons why vitamin D deficiency happens to people.
  1. You don’t eat enough vitamin D. Some foods such as fish and fish oils, egg yolks, fortified milk and beef liver have vitamin D and are animal based. This means people on a strict vegan diet may have vitamin D deficiency.
  2. You don’t go outside enough. Sunlight absorption is the main source of your vitamin D, so if you don’t get enough of it of live in northern places, such as New England.
  3. You have dark skin. Since the pigment melanin slows down vitamin D production while in the sun, no wonder people with dark skin have a bigger chance of vitamin D deficiency.
  4. Your kidneys no longer have the ability to convert vitamin D to its active form. When people grow older, their kidneys are less able to convert vitamin D to its active form. This makes vitamin D deficiency even more possible.
  5. Your digestive tract cannot adequately absorb vitamin D anymore. Some medical issues such as Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and celiac disease can affect your intestines ability to absorb vitamin D from the food you eat.
These 5 reasons are ways you can gain the disease. Now I will tell you the simple cure, more sun, vitamin D foods, and of course medications for vitamin D. To sum it up, you need to gain more vitamin D until you have normal vitamin D levels again. If you live north, move to a southern place where the climate is hotter, If you have dark skin, stay out in the sun longer, but eat lots of vitamin D foods as well. I hope that this blog has provided a glimpse into what vitamin D deficiency is, how it is caused, and how you can get rid of it.
