The Doldrums Book Review

THE
DOLDRUMS
By: Nicholas Gannon

The Doldrums is a book about a kid named Archer Helmsley who is an only child and lives in the town of Rosewood. His grandparents have both been reported missing on an iceberg. Archer wants to meet his grandparents and become an explorer. First he talks to his neighbor, a boy named Oliver Glub, to see if he can help him pull this stunt off. He says, “Ok,” to Archer because he believes Archer can’t pull it off, one reason is that Archer’s parents don’t even let him leave the house.
Then they begin developing a plan and Archer begins to sneak over to Oliver’s house next door to hang out. After that he finds out he’ll have a new neighbor who is a teacher named Mrs. Murkley, who used to teach at Raven Wood, a disciplinary school in his town. She is invited over to dinner at their house and Archer ends up making her very mad. His parents decide to make very strict rules for Archer after he makes the guest angry, making him not leave his room for a long time.
When he finally sneaks over to Oliver’s house, they look at yet another new neighbor arriving. The new neighbor’s name is Adelaide, and she’s from France. She used to be a ballerina, but has a wooden leg. She tells everyone it was a crocodile who ate it. It turns out something strange happened to Adelaide.
Adelaide was a very good ballerina. All the girls hated her though out of jealousy of her skills. One day Adelaide’s dad told the baker, to make fresh croissants because he hadn’t been making them lately. The baker started seeing things because he kept waking up earlier than usual to bake and ended up ramming his truck into a lampost, making it topple over. Adelaide stepped outside as this happened and the lamppost fell on her leg, causing her to have a wooden leg and preventing her from being a ballerina.
They end up all meeting and deciding to run to the docking port at Rosewood to get on a boat. Then when they are at the museum and everything is going according to plan, Mrs. Murkley spots them and they accidently free the tigers. Then they escape from the tigers and stay alive. But will they make it to the docking port? I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is very funny and has a surprising ending.
